Manteo Ministry: Catholic Mission to the Lumbee Indians

The Lumbee Indian Nation has been a part of North Carolina since before it was a state. Originally known as the Croatan people of North Carolina, the Lumbee took their new name in the early 20th century. They are a mixed tribe of Sioan, Algonquian and Iriqouis Indians that banded together when European settlements had taken much of the land. Today, the Lumbee Indians are the largest Native American tribe east of the Mississippi and there is no dedicated Catholic mission among them.

With the permission of his Bishop, Adam is beginning his work among his people to bring to them the Catholic faith. If you are interested in supporting this mission please contact the ministry team at

Why Manteo?

When the English first came to the Roanoke area, one of the first Indians they met was Manteo. His name means, to snatch in Algonquain, and we do not know why he was named such, but what we do know is that he snatched up the English ways very quickly.

So much so, that he became one of the first Indian converts to Christianity and became a peacemaker between the Indian People and the English. While it is unclear what his conversion to Anglicanism did with the relations between him and his people, it is clear that he truly acted as Christ acted in trying to develop peace between the two nations, taking in the hungry, sick and thirsty after the fall of Roanoke. When we look at the means of our own ministry, and what we hope to accomplish, Manteo is a great reminder of what it means to be a Native American Christian. We also hope that in our own ministry we can live the letter of St. James, “Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith…you see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone…For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead.” (James 2:18-24,26). We pray that you will keep our ministry in prayer and consider making a pledge of donation to our mission.
